Sporting clay shoot benefits local Meals on Wheels program

Mid-America Nutrition Program will host its second annual sporting clay shoot, as a Meals on Wheels Benefit Fundraiser 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 14.

The event will take place at the Locust Point Gun Club, 19939 S. Berryton Rd., Lyndon, north of Pomona Lake.

The entry fee to participate is $40 for 50 targets, (additional rounds available). Lunch is included for one shooter with a paid entry fee. Over a $1,000 in prizes will be drawn on the day of the shoot.

Mid-America Nutrition Program operates the local Meals on Wheels, which provides essential nutrition to homebound seniors, but also a wellness check that assures they are safe. Many of those receiving Meals on Wheels don’t see anyone other than the person who delivers their meal on a daily basis.

Mid-America Nutrition Program receives 40 percent of its funding from individuals’ donations and fundraising, 53 percent of its funding from federal and state tax dollars, and 7 percent from the six counties that it serves. Despite relying so heavily on donations, MANP never denies a meal to anyone in need.

Mid-America Nutrition Program was established in 1984 as a not for profit agency to provide meals and nutrition support to help seniors remain independent in their own homes. The program is a cooperative arrangement between six counties: Franklin, Anderson, Osage, Linn, Miami and Coffey. Serving six counties allows Mid-America Nutrition to take advantage of “economies of scale”, saving each of the counties money in providing essential services in their area. The meals are funded in part by the Older American’s Act, the state of Kansas and each of the counties served. The state and federal funding is administered by the East Central Kansas Area Agency on Aging and Disability Resources.
