Interstate crash sends 2 to Wichita hospital

Two people were flown by Lifestar to a Wichita hospital Tuesday after a car crossed the median on Interstate 35 east of Emporia and hit an oncoming vehicle in the other lane.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, Dimitri A. Dimitroyannis, 53, Harris, Texas, was driving a 2001 Volvo northbound on I-35 about 12:18 p.m. March 26, when the vehicle left the right side of the roadway, then crossed both northbound lanes into the center median, and struck an oncoming 2012 Honda in the southbound left lane.

The driver of the Honda was Nancy E. Cornelius, 75, Fort Worth, Texas. She was flown by air ambulance from the scene to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. A passenger in the vehicle, Kay L. Cornelius, 77, Fort Worth, Texas, was transported by ambulance to Newton Memorial Hospital, Emporia, and from there flown to Wesley Medical Center.

Dimitroyannis was listed in the report as having a possible injury, but he declined ambulance transport. Occupants of both vehicles were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

The accident happened 6.8 miles east of Emporia, in Lyon County.
