Charles J. Herschell Jr., 93, Overbrook: Dec. 17, 1920 – June 16, 2014

061714-charles-herschellOVERBROOK – Charles J. Herschell Jr. died June 16, 2014. He was born on Dec. 17, 1920.

Charles served in the United States Army during World War II with the field artillery division. He worked on the family dairy farm and also as a head mechanic for the Army Corps of Engineers, Pomona Lake, retiring in 1986. Charles continued working until he was 80, helping Stan Friesen farm.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Overbrook, and also the American Legion Anderson-Raible Post 239.

On Dec. 23, 1939, Charles was united in marriage with Lucy Finch, at the Worden Evangelical Parsonage. In 2012, he and Lucy celebrated 73 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 2013.

Charles was the leader of the Herschell clan. He lived for his family, which includes kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great-grandkids. He always worried more about them than himself, even when dying. Charles welcomed everyone into his family. He was a loving father and a wonderful friend, loved by everyone.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elvin, Harold, and Kenneth Herschell; and two sisters, Luella Saathoff and Elaine Daniel.

He is survived by a son Jim and wife Letha Herschell, of Barstow, Calif; four daughters, Mary and husband Bill Engle, Michigan Valley, Kan., Vonna Hendrix, Topeka, Kan., June Ware, Roxbury, Kan., and Scharlet and husband Jay Sherwood, Milford, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

The family invites friends to join them for a visitation at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, at Overbrook United Methodist Church, Overbrook. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church.
