Opportunity to help others blossoms during Sunflower Days

While having fun at Sunflower Days at Melvern this week, why not help out the Help House?

Help House will be hosting a silent auction at the county fair at Melvern. Everyone is invited to bid on items they like. Help House is also seeking items to be donated for the fundraiser auction, which will be held again at Overbrook Osage County Fair in August.

Help House, based in Lyndon, helps people from across Osage County.  The group sponsors and organizes the Lyndon and Carbondale mobile food pantries with volunteers from those communities assisting. The next mobile distribution is at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, at Jones Park, Lyndon.

To receive food from either of the mobile distribution sites, a form stating the number in your household is required, but no income verification is needed. If you are picking up food for someone else, you must have a note stating so to give to the volunteer.

During the month of May, through the Emergency Food Assistance Program and Harvesters, Help House provided 150 households with food. Within those households were a total of 520 individuals – 257 adults, 135 children, 35 elderly and 93 disabled.

Beginning this month and continuing through July, the Help House Fan Club will collect fans for those in need who do not have air conditioning.  Anyone who has a fan to donate is asked to contact Help House at 131 W. 15th St., Lyndon, or 785-828-4888.

Immediate and ongoing food pantry needs: Spaghetti sauce, canned fruit, pancake mix and syrup, cereals, Jell-o, cooking oil, sugar, flour, canned meat, shaving cream, trial sizes of toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner,  diapers, denture cleaner, bath soaps, laundry soap, dish soap and toilet paper.

Cash donations for the food pantry are also welcome and can be mailed to Help House, P.O. Box 356, Lyndon, KS 66451.

Sunflower Days began today and runs through Saturday; see related story here.
