Camp as if it were 1964: Go retro at Pomona Lake with vintage campers, car cruise

Greg Thill, Lyndon, drove his 1959 Chevy Impala in area parades to remind everyone of the July 12 Going Retro at Pomona Lake.

It will be a fun weekend to visit Pomona State Park and step back in time, as Pomona Lake “goes retro” as part of the lake’s 50th anniversary celebration. Friends of Pomona State Park has invited owners of vintage boats, campers and recreational vehicles to visit or camp at the lake during “Going Retro at Pomona Lake” this weekend, July 11-13. A classic car “cruise-in” is also planned for Saturday.

As of this week, 12 owners of vintage campers had scheduled to attend and have their campers on display for an open house 1:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Waucondah Campground in the state park.

Everyone is invited to the open house, with the owners offering their hospitality by sharing their campers and experiences with anyone interested. As the lake was dedicated in 1964, the Friends had offered owners of vintage campers 50 years or older one night’s free camping in the state park if they would camp for the weekend event.

In conjunction with the retro weekend, owners of classic or antique autos are invited for a cruise-in and to spend the day at the lake. All cruisers and enthusiasts are welcome at the cruise-in, which begins at 9 a.m. with registration at Southwind Shelter House, Pomona State Park. Cars will be on display 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and then will tour the state park, cruise across the dam and through Michigan Valley Park.

The Friends are also planning some old-time fun for the kids, with retro games 10 a.m. to noon at Burning Heart playground. All kids 3 to 12 are invited to play.
