Heat advisory extended through Sunday; hot weather predicted for next 2 days

Sun-55Excessive heat is in the forecast for the next couple of days, and the National Weather Service has extended a heat advisory for Osage County and northeast Kansas until 8 p.m. tonight.

While NWS is advising heat indices of 100 to 105 degrees will occur this afternoon lasting into the evening hours, there is a chance for thunderstorms after 3 p.m. and into tonight. Some of the storms could produce localized damaging wind gusts.

High heat conditions are expected in the area through Tuesday, with thunderstorms possible Tuesday through Thursday.

A heat advisory is issued when high humidity is expected to combine with hot temperatures to make it feel like it is 105 degrees or greater. Persons are advised to avoid prolonged work in the sun, or in poorly ventilated areas. Also advised is to keep plenty of liquids on hand and try to stay in an air conditioned environment.

Excessive heat of this nature can rapidly cause heat related sickness. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, OSHA recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency; call 911 if it is suspected someone is suffering from heat stroke.

The heat advisory, in effect at noon today, is set to expire at 8 p.m. Aug. 24, and covers Osage, Republic, Washington, Marshall, Nemaha, Brown, Cloud, Clay, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Jefferson, Ottawa, Dickinson, Geary, Morris, Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Douglas, Lyon, Franklin, Coffey and Anderson counties.
