James Elliott Pollom, 81, Topeka: Feb. 10, 1933 – Aug. 28, 2014

TOPEKA – James Elliott Pollom, 81, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at The House at Midland Care, in Topeka. He was born on Feb. 10, 1933, in Manhattan, the son of Fred and Maud Humiston Pollom.

Jim graduated from Kansas State University in 1956. He played on the Wildcat baseball team for four years. He joined the United States Air Force where he attended navigator’s school. He served as a first lieutenant in the 11th Air Refueling Service until 1959. Upon his return, he received a master’s degree in education and physical education at KSU.

He taught science and physical education in various schools in Kansas, where he also served as a basketball, baseball and track coach.

In 1970, Jim took a position with Moore Business Systems, in Topeka. He left in 1976 to work for Neon Tube Light as a sales representative. He retired from there in 1994.

Jim was married to Neta Wurm in 1961. They later divorced. He married Thelma Neilson Sedgwick in 1988.

He held season football tickets for the KSU Wildcats for 27 years, traveling to several bowl games in support of his beloved ‘Cats. Jim and Thelma also held season basketball tickets to the Washburn Ichabods for 25 years.

Jim was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jean Ann, and a sister, Majol Thompson.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma, of the home; son, Russell (Janell) of Spring Hill; daughter, Jamie (Jim) Botts, Stilwell; stepson, Ken (Sally) Sedgwick, Topeka; stepdaughter, Kathy Sandstrom, Lyndon; sister, Jean White, Topeka; and 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Grace Point Church, 5400 SW Huntoon St., Topeka. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Point Church or Midland Hospice House, sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Ave., Lyndon, KS 66451.
