Outdoors: Fishing reports for Melvern Lake, Pomona Lake and Osage County Fishing Lake

The following fishing and lake reports for Osage County lakes were provided by Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.

Melvern Lake – Updated: 8/28/2014

Species Rating Size Baits, Method, & Location
Crappie Slow-Fair 0.33-0.75 lbs. Fish being caught on jigs and minnows over brush.  High percentage of small fish, but few keepers.
Black bass Slow-Fair 0.5-3 lbs. Casting crankbaits, spinnerbaits and jigs along rocky shorelines.
Channel catfish Fair 1-5 lbs. Using cut bait and dead minnows.
Lake level was 0.48′ below normal, release = 20 cfs, and temperature = 80 on August 28. Melvern Reservoir has zebra mussels. Remember to clean, drain, and dry your boat and fishing equipment when leaving the lake to keep from spreading them to other lakes.

Pomona Lake – Updated: 8/29/2014

Species Rating Size Baits, Method, & Location
Channel catfish Good 2 – 7 pounds The fish feeders are on. Use worms or dip baits and crappie entrails or cut shad, stink/prepared baits. Lakewide or stilling basin.
Walleye Slow varies The walleye population is improving, try off windy points, crank baits or jigs tipped with nightcrawler.
White bass/Wipers Good varies Lakewide and the windy side of the points, wipers are following the schools of shad, minnows or shad colored lures, off the USACE swim beach.
Crappie Slow most were 9 – 14 inches Lakewide, marina docks, over brush piles, black and pink tube jigs, minnows.about 6 ft on the winds side, most fish are over 10 inches, fish are slowly moving in.

Osage State Fishing Lake – Updated: 8/28/2014

Bluegill Slow-Fair Up to 0.3 lbs Using worm under bobber
Largemouth Bass Slow-Fair 0.5-2 lbs Using jigs, crankbaits and spinners.
Channel catfish Fair 1-4 lbs Using worms, chicken liver, stinkbait around feeders.
