Kathryn E. O’Bryhim, 90, Overbrook: Oct. 7, 1923 – Sept. 30, 2014

100314-kathyrn-o-bryhim2OVERBROOK – Kathryn E. O’Bryhim, 90, of Overbrook, Kan., died gracefully in her home on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014.

Kay began life Oct. 7, 1923, in Maricopa, Ariz., the youngest child of George and Jessie (Freed) Frary.

A graduate of Herbert Hoover Senior High School, in San Diego, Calif., Kay went on to work at the Adel Division of General Metals Corporation, in Burbank, Calif.

She later married Donald Wyman and gave birth to her children Pam and Mike. Kay continued her work with Adel while the men went off to fight in World War II, and was proud of her ability and opportunity to travel in a sales capacity and support her children.

She and Donald eventually divorced and several years later she once again found love when she met Bernard O’Bryhim. They were married on Nov. 11, 1954. A train ride to Overbrook, Kan., introduced her to a life with four seasons in a small Midwestern town which she loved.

Two more children, Cliff and Connie, rounded out the O’Bryhim family. Kay was an active working partner at O’Bryhim’s Thriftway, the family grocery store, well into her 70s.

Kay was a member of various community organizations including Searchlight, Thimble Club, Overbrook Methodist Church and Overbrook Library. She enjoyed working for the election board and was one of the few Democrats in town.

Her youngest child, Connie, became deaf at the age of 3 and Kay became an advocate for oral education among the deaf community. The game of bridge became her passion at the age of 60 because she observed that among the senior population, bridge players were sharper.

Kay is survived by daughter Pam O’Bryhim, of Overbrook and Tupper Lake, N.Y, and her daughters Beccy Bucci, Tobi Hay and Callie Brown; son Mike O’Bryhim and his wife, Kathy, of Wichita, Kan., and their sons Tim and Brendan (Iris); son Cliff O’Bryhim, Overbrook, and his sons Brad (Bliss) and Chad; and 6 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bernard, daughter Connie and older siblings George, Florence, Eleanor and Ethelmae.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Oct. 11, 2014, at the Overbrook Methodist Church, followed by a celebration of life at the Brookside Community Room.
