Everyone invited to Vassar’s fall day of fun

vassarfunfest2014_bigThe Vassar community has a day full of old-fashioned fun planned for this year’s FunFest, and everyone is invited. The annual FunFest is on Saturday, Oct. 25, and begins with a Halloween costume parade at 11 a.m. (lineup at 10:45 at the town pump). The parade ends at the historical Vassar schoolhouse for costume judging and prizes for kids of all ages.

Other fun family events include pony rides, kids crafts and games, outdoor bingo, pie-baking contest, free entertainment by Prospect Bluegrass, and face painting. In addition, the spacious school grounds will once again be the site of a car show that is becoming popular among car enthusiasts.

The Lyndon Lions Club will host the Kansas Lions’ mobile screening unit, which will provide free health screenings. Local Lions will also be selling their ever-popular pecans, just in time for holiday treat season.

The event will also help raise funds for the upkeep of the Vassar schoolhouse and the surrounding community park. Area volunteers, in the new shelter house, will offer grilled burgers and hot dogs, homemade chili, pies, cookies and cake; drinks and chips.

Silent auction items (new and gently used) will fill the one-room schoolhouse 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bidders need not be present at closing and will be contacted if they have the high bid on any items.

The FunFest has grown each year since the first event in 2008 and continues its tradition of providing a day of family fun and entertainment.

Vassar is about 30 miles southeast of Topeka: Take Highway 75 south to Highway 268, east to Croco Road, and north 3/4 mile. For more information about the FunFest, call 785-828-4810; for car show information, call 785-214-9448; to make donations for the silent auction, call 785-828-4284.
