I-35 rollover accident claims lives of New Strawn woman and child

A New Strawn woman and a young boy were killed and two other children injured in a one-car accident on Interstate 35 near Waverly Tuesday evening.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports that Krystal R. Smith, 26, of New Strawn, was driving a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound on I-35 about 5:30 p.m. Oct. 14, when for an unknown reason the vehicle left the roadway and entered the median. The investigation showed Smith attempted to bring the vehicle back onto the roadway and overcorrected, causing it to overturn several times before coming to rest on its wheels in the west ditch facing southeast.

Smith and 4-year-old Cory M. Sheppard, also of New Strawn, were killed in the accident. Two passengers, Christian M. Smith, 9, and Doavan J. Krutchfield, 6, both of New Strawn, were injured and transported by Osage County EMS to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

The accident happened on I-35 at mile marker 162, or about four miles north of Waverly in Osage County.

Note: KHP reported Cory Sheppard’s age as 4 years old, but had not verified his age at the time the report was made.
