Help House: Kindhearted gifts can brighten someone’s holidays

October was a busy month at Help House, 218 unduplicated households in Osage County were served during the month, up 170 households during that same time last year. Of that number 188 households received food. The number of individuals totaled 618, up from 498 last October. There were 123 coats given out from the coat drive from Oct. 14 through Oct. 31.

A total of 1,283 food items have been brought in to help fill the pantry. Several food drives were held by area organizations in the last couple of weeks, the Santa Fe Trail NHS Zombie Walk brought in 75 pounds of food. From Pomona State Park, Friends of the Park, and haunted trail event, 396 items totaled 450 pounds. The Lyndon FBLA food drive on Oct. 31 collected 469 items. On behalf of those who will receive assistance as a result, we thank everyone who helped collect and those who so generously gave.

We would like to remind all hunters in the area, if you have venison you would like to donate to the food pantry, we are happy to accept it as long as it has been processed, packaged and dated in a USDA inspected plant.

Looking ahead to Thanksgiving, turkeys will be given out on Nov. 25 to those signed up in advance to receive one. Help House will be closed Nov. 26 through Nov. 28.
