K-170 bridges near Reading now open to all traffic

Two new bridges are now open to all traffic on state Highway 170 about 3.5 miles east of Reading. The project began in June to remove two existing bridges and replace them with a haunched slab span bridge and a reinforced concrete box. New guard fence and flatter side slopes were constructed to provide an extra measure of safety to the traveling public.

Eastbound and westbound K-170 was closed to all through traffic throughout the project duration and a detour directed traffic to state Highway 99 and U.S. Highway 56. The completed bridges were opened to all traffic on Nov. 19.

Bryan-Ohlmeier Construction Co., Inc., Paola, was the primary contractor on the double bridge replacement project, with a total contract cost of $1.189 million. The project was funded by T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature in May 2010.
