Fredericksons honored with Frontier Extension District Appreciation Award

Pat and Ron Fredrickson, Osage City, receive the annual 2014 Frontier Extension District Appreciation Award, presented by Gary Thompson, Extension district governing board chairman, right.

Ron and Pat Fredrickson, Osage City, were honored as recipients of a 2014 Frontier Extension District Appreciation Award. The awards are presented annually to persons residing in the extension district who have made important contributions to the extension program.

Rearing their two children in Massachusetts, the Fredricksons became involved with the Cooperative Extension Service when their daughter, Anne, was a 4-H club member. Pat was the 4-H club leader, and Ron helped with 4-H club activities.

When the couple moved back to Osage County in 1992, they settled west of Osage City, near Ron’s parent’s farm. Pat became a member of an Extension FCE unit, and helped the unit restore the Rapp School building as a historical site. They have used the services of the Extension Service by asking for advice, soil testing, and working with Extension staff to create feed rations. They have also continued to maintain their son’s 55-acre certified tree farm, with help from the state forester.

Following the death of their son, Dr. Doren Fredrickson, Pat and Ron created a 4-H scholarship in his memory. A $500 annual 4-H scholarship is presented each year to an Osage County 4-H member planning to attend an accredited college or technical school. The Fredricksons have also made a donation to build the future Doren D. Fredrickson Arena, which will be located on the fairgrounds in Osage City. The facility will benefit many 4-H youth in Osage County. The arena is given in memory of their son, who was a pediatrician.

The Fredricksons have also established a 4-H scholarship in Lyon County in their daughter’s name: Anne J. Fredrickson.

Other winners of the 2014 Frontier Extension District Appreciation Award were Brenda Guenther, Franklin County, and Richard and Dorothy Miller, Anderson County.
