2013 Smoke in the Spring Grand Champions

John Beavers, of Grillin’ Beavers barbecue team, Thornton, Colo., the grand champion of Osage City’s Smoke in the Spring State BBQ Championship, receives his award from Kandy Anderson, of Orbis Corp., which sponsored the grand champion award.

The 2013 Smoke in the Spring State BBQ Championship came to an end Saturday afternoon with the champs of the contest announced in the barbecue-team-filled Osage City recreation building.

Smoke in the Spring contest organizer Corey Linton presented the awards to the champions of each class.

John Beavers, of Grillin’ Beavers barbecue team, Thornton, Colo., was named the grand champion of  the annual state barbecue championship contest. In addition to Grand Champion, the Grillin’ Beavers also won class champion in the brisket category.

The Pellet Envy barbecue team, head cook, Rod Gray, from Leawood, took reserve champion at the 2013 SITS. CenturyLink sponsored the reserve champion award.

Class champions for pork were Dodge County Smokers, Mission; Neal Dunker, team chief. Pork class was sponsored by Osage City Chamber of Commerce.

Pork Me Purple, Jerod Caton, Overland Park, took class champion in ribs category, sponsored by the City of Osage City.

Whiskey Pit BBQ Co., Brad Malm, head chef, Lindsborg, turned in the class champion chicken to barbecue judges Saturday. The chicken class was sponsored by Frito-Lay.

 

In addition to Grand Champion, the Grillin’ Beavers also won class champion in the brisket category, with the award presented by Jim Lohmeyer, of Flint Hills Beverage LLC, sponsor of the award.

Lil’ Fiddlers, Willie Humphreys, Cleveland, Mo., won SITS’ special Cook’s Choice category, sponsored by State Farm and Jodi Lohmeyer-Stark.

Bob Eickhoff, of BBQ Bonanza, Kansas City, center, presents a new smoker to the Dawghouse BBQ team, headed by Lee Messinger, Overland Park. Eickhoff donated the cooker, which was given away in a drawing of all contest participants. A special award was also presented to Eickhoff for his loyal support of Smoke in the Spring by donation of a cooker for the contests.

 

Ribs N Bibs barbecue team, headed by Cory Walquist, Osage City, won the county traveling trophy from among nine county teams who competed in the contest. Award sponsored by Osage County Herald Chronicle.
