Paul ‘Bud’ Smoot, 71, Lyndon: March 17, 1943 – Feb. 9, 2015

LYNDON – Paul “Bud” Smoot, 71, passed away on Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook, Kan. He was born on March 17, 1943, in LaHarpe, Kan., the son of Ira and Mary Poe Smoot.

Bud was raised and attended school in LaHarpe. He later moved to Iola and then made his home in Lyndon in 1974.

He worked as a custodian for Lyndon USD 421, retiring in 1997. He owned and operated Bud’s Bunny Farm for several years. He had also coached boys summer league baseball in Iola and Lyndon for many years.

Bud married Ila Anderson on Nov. 4, 1983, in Lyndon. They divorced in 2011.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Mary; by five brothers, Richard, Ira (Russell), Melvin (Albert), Glen and Carl; a sister, Dorothy; and a stepbrother, Clyde.

Bud is survived by his daughter, Mary (Scott) Jordan, of Lyndon; son, Doug Smoot, Yates Center; brother, Dean Smoot, Vassar; two sisters, Margaret Simpkins, Pocatello, Idaho, and Stella Higinbotham, Iola; stepmother, Minnie Smoot, Salina; three half sisters, Shirley Leroy, Chanute, and Marcella Smoot and Aleta Flaherty, both of Salina; and five grandchildren, four step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Feltner Funeral Chapel, in Lyndon. Inurnment will be in the Vassar Cemetery. To honor Bud’s memory, the family asks that all family and friends wear something bearing either the KU or KC Royals logo to the service.
