Kansans urged to prepare as winter storm system enters the state

As a new winter storm system moves into Kansas, the Kansas Division of Emergency Management is reminding Kansans to make sure their emergency supplies are ready.

A storm system will move through the state Friday evening through late Sunday night or early Monday morning. During this storm system, all regions of the state will receive precipitation.

“This is currently not expected to be a major storm system,” said Angee Morgan, KDEM deputy director. “Just the same, road conditions may become icy and snowfalls could range from less than an inch to eight inches of snow in western parts of the state.

“If you plan to travel, be sure your car emergency kit is stocked, check your tires and antifreeze levels, be sure your gas tank is full and your cell phone is fully charged,” said Morgan.

Car emergency kits should contain such items as nonperishable food items, water, flashlights, portable radio, extra batteries, blankets, signal flares, a folding shovel, extra medications and other emergency supplies.

Outdoor pets are especially vulnerable to bitter cold and extreme wind chills. Bring outdoor pets inside if possible or ensure that they have a draft-free enclosure with straw type bedding that is large enough to sit in and lay down, but small enough to hold their body heat if they must remain outside. Always make sure that your pets have access to food and non-frozen water.
