An Overbrook Rotarian has been awarded the Rotary Foundation’s highest citation in recognition of his more than 50 years of service to the Rotary organization and its charitable foundation.

Jon Wilhite, Overbrook, was presented the Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service by Kevin Tubbesing, Eastern Kansas Rotary district governor, during the Overbrook Rotary Club’s April 16 meeting. In addition to club members, six former district governors attended the meeting for the presentation.

The Citation for Meritorious Service recognizes individual Rotarians who have demonstrated outstanding active service to the Rotary Foundation for more than one year.

“Jon has been a leader and has set an example of supporting the foundation in its work,” said Vickie Randel, district Rotary Foundation chair.

Wilhite was recognized as a committed and active supporter of the Rotary Foundation and its programs since 1962, when he joined Rotary International. His service has included, among many other things, the following Rotary Foundation participation:

  • Service in a leadership capacity on his club’s foundation committee, promoting financial support for the foundation by the club’s members.
  • Serving for many years as an interviewer for the district’s selection of recipients of the prestigious Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, to support graduate study abroad and to promote the mission of Rotary.
  • Hosting members of the annual Rotary Group Study Exchange teams visiting Rotary District 5710 from foreign countries for a vocational and cultural exchange, and planning itineraries for the teams during their one-month long stay in the District.
  • Travel to Panama to participate in service projects with Rotary districts there, providing assistance to needy villagers in the areas of water purification and sanitation, health and disease prevention, and basic literacy.

The Overbrook Rotary Club meets at 7 a.m. every Tuesday at the Brookside Community Room.
