Help House: You can help by filling a basket with useful items

Again this year we will be holding a Silent Auction during the Sunflower Days Fair in Melvern on June 27 and on Aug. 15 at the Overbrook Osage County Fair. Volunteers are out and about in our communities seeking donations for these auctions. This is our largest fundraising event. If you or your business would like to donate to this and you have not been contacted, please call Pam Bileau, Help House director, at 785-828-4888.

The number of households receiving from the food bank during April was 200, with 335 adults, 197 children, 49 seniors and 108 disabled in those homes. During the month of April we purchased $2,275.70 of food from Harvesters.

May has been designated Fill Your Basket Month by Help House. We would like to ask all of our churches and individuals and other organizations that would like to help to collect food for the food pantry from May 1 through May 30. Food then should be drop off at the center during business hours (please do not leave food items in the shed).

With the number of households being served the last couple of months and in April, Harvesters was even low on what they were able to deliver, the shelves were almost as empty as Old Mother Hubbard’s. With school out and children home and not receiving breakfast and lunch at school the summer months become increasingly difficult for families to put food on the table. We know the requests for assistance will become critical. Please donate if you can. If your family is in need of assistance, please come see us we will do all we can to help.

Please fill your baskets, tubs, or boxes with items most needed during the summer: canned fruit, vegetables, canned pastas, regular pasta and pasta sauces, soups, peanut butter, jellies, tuna, canned chicken or little smokies. Other items in short supply are personal care items such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, bars of bath soap, shaving cream, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes.

Help House is in need of household items for those in need, such as kitchen items, dishes, small appliances, linens or bedding, small lamps and wall décor.

As always thank you to all of the churches and individuals who support this ministry. God bless you.
