SOS plans summer camp for Osage County youth

SOS is organizing an interactive and educational summer camp “Summer Sunsation” for youth in the Quenemo and Melvern area in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

SOS believes bullying, healthy relationships, internet and personal safety, and the ability to identify safe adults are crucial pieces to the growth and development of young children. SOS will continue teaching concepts offered in Marais des Cygnes Valley Elementary School classrooms during the school year.

An important activity the youth will create is a scrapbook documenting summer camp activities. The activity book can instill a sense of pride about their summer accomplishments and what they learned during camp, and serve as a keepsake of their fun summer. Other camp activities include tie-dyed camp T-shirts, water balloon activities, and multiple team building exercises. These types of skills are important for youth to be successful in school settings and their lives.

Many youth do not receive nutritious lunches in the summer, and SOS is searching for individuals or organizations to donate lunches or snacks each day of camp.

SOS’s goal is to help create healthy and violence-free communities by educating youth about a variety of issues, not just during the school year, but the summer, too.

“Summer Sunsation” will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 3 through July 15, at Marais des Cygnes Valley Elementary School, in Quenemo.
