County hazardous waste pickup schedule kicks off with Lyndon citywide cleanup

Osage County’s household hazardous waste pickup begins Saturday at Lyndon with the first of eight pickup dates scheduled through spring and summer. The first HHW pickup of the season will be during Lyndon’s citywide cleanup day.

The HHW pickup is conducted by the Osage County Road and Bridge Department, solid waste division, and was begun a number of years ago in conjunction with funding through the Lake Region Solid Waste Authority, which supplied a trailer for the service.

Saturday’s pickup at Lyndon begins at 9 a.m. at the county’s recycling center at 208 W. 17th St. Everyone dropping off items is advised to look for the red trailer manned by road and bridge employees, who will inspect and sort items and help unload vehicles.

The pickup allows disposal of many common household products that should not be disposed of in the regular waste stream.

Examples of household waste that can be disposed of during the pickups include:

  • Outdoor products: Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, pool chemicals, and vermin poisons.
  • Household products: Bleach, cleaning products, mothballs, shoe polish, disinfectants, household batteries, and furniture polish.
  • Automotive products: Used motor oil, anti-freeze, brake fluid, car wax, automobile batteries, and carburetor cleaners.
  • Paint: Latex paint, oil base paint, stains, paint remover, paint thinner, and spray paint.

The trailer can also accept items that contain mercury.

Items that will not be accepted include: Explosives, Kepone, tires, ammunition, asbestos, radioactive material, compressed gas cylinders, and bio-hazards.

Pickups have been scheduled on Thursdays and Saturdays across the county as follows:

Lyndon Citywide Cleanup

Saturday’s HHW pickup coincides with Lyndon’s citywide cleanup day, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents will be able to drop off unwanted items at the city equipment area between Washington and Adams streets on Third Street. Trash containers will be at the site, which will be manned by a city employee. Tires, limbs and liquids will not be accepted. The city asks that iron or metal objects, or appliances be left outside of the trash containers. Anyone with household hazardous waste will be directed to the HHW pickup point at the recycling center.
