Sons of Legion celebrate first year’s accomplishments

By Geri Schuler

LYNDON, Kan. – Sons of the American Legion Post 125 began its new membership year on July 1, 2015. As of then they were halfway to their membership goal, with the help of a great kick off on Flag Day when they had a membership drive, flag dropbox dedication and fundraising cookout.

With the group’s first full membership year past, having began the chapter last year, they showed why many of the members had joined – community involvement and respect for veterans.

They wouldn’t have come so far, so fast this membership year if wasn’t for the help from some great individuals behind the scenes with the Flag Day celebration. The SAL gives special thanks to three people in particular: Legion member Lou Ogle, who provided the flag dropbox and contacted some very generous people to paint it – Greg Hoefer, R&B Aircraft – and place signage – Frank Burkdoll, Burkdoll Vinyl Signs.

The SAL hopes to keep this pace going into their first meeting of new membership year at 7 p.m. July 14, at the American Legion Post 125, Lyndon. New members are welcome to come and sign up then, or for more information, visit facebook.com/lyndonlegion or email [email protected] or squadron adjutant David Diver at [email protected].

The group’s next major activity will be the Hero Run/Walk 5k on Oct. 3, 2015, before Lyndon’s fall festival. The run’s theme encourages people to run as all kinds of heroes. Proceeds will go to Sons of the American Legion and Josh Dogs, stuffed dogs that are made with a story and given to children of deployed soldiers. Participants are invited to run and show their inner hero by supporting a good cause.
