Lyndon Legion completes mission: Welcome home, veterans

The Lyndon community welcomes home honored Kansas veterans aboard a float in Saturday’s Fourth of July parade.

LYNDON – On the Fourth of July they came to Lyndon from all directions – Burlington, Ozawkie, Topeka – to get the proper welcome home that many didn’t get when they returned from war. These were war veterans from all war eras, a majority from the Vietnam era.

American Legion Post 125 and its Sons of the American Legion chapter decided this year to have a float behind their color guard to resolve this issue and give these veterans a proper homecoming for which some had waited more than 40 years. They knew that at the Lyndon Fourth of July parade, because this community has great respect for veterans, this was the right time for these veterans and other veterans to have a proper welcome home. We thank them and the community for making this event so special.

This was the post’s first event for their new membership year, which began July 1. Post 125 recently swore in 2016 officers, including commander and service officer Jayson Massey, vice commander Lou Wohlitz, adjutant Erin Massey, and Geri Thomas, finance officer and Americanism and child and youth chairperson. Danny Roush was appointed as sergeant of arms and Amanda Harrison as chaplain.

This coming year they have so far planned to extend their post by adding Legion Riders, support their Sons of the American Legion in the Hero Run before Fall Fest in Lyndon, raise money with Biergarten at Lyndon’s fall festival, and starting a remodel of their post – and this is just the first four months of the 2016 membership year.

The post meets the first Wednesday of the month; the next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Lyndon post, 507 Topeka Ave. All members are welcome to attend and anyone interested in joining is also invited.
