August: Osage County celebrates final fair of the season at Overbrook

OVERBROOK – It’s August, Osage County, and that means it time for the final county fair of 2015.

The Overbrook Osage County Fair officially begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, with the horse show, while all other fair activities get under way Wednesday, Aug. 12.

This year the Overbrook fair board has scheduled nighttime motorized entertainment at the fairgrounds’ renovated arena each day of the fair, beginning with lawn mower pulls on Wednesday night.

A new event this year is the hot rod tractor and custom truck pulling competition Saturday night, Aug. 15. The event promises “loud and proud” competition between “the big boys with big toys.” Other nightly events are the diesel truck and tractor pull on Thursday; circle track races Friday; and the demolition derby Sunday afternoon.

All entries are also invited for the annual fair parade on Saturday night, which begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 15. This year’s theme is “childrens’ books”, and cash prizes will be given for first, second and third places in the following float categories: most realistic, true to theme, and most humorous or comical.

Grand marshals of the parade are members of the O’Bryhim family.

Kids entries in the parade are also encouraged, and they will follow the color guard. Kids should assemble at the Overbrook clinic parking lot before 6 p.m. Saturday.

Parade line-up begins at 5:15 p.m. with floats lining up near Overbrook Thriftway on Maple Street. Co-chairpersons of the parade are Scott Averill and Denise Hoback. For more information, call 785-224-9488, or fax entries to 866-936-9557, mail to Denise Hoback/Parade, Brookside Retirement Community, 700 W. Seventh St., Overbrook, KS 66524, or e-mail dzhob[email protected].

The parade will also feature the annual “Battle of the Bands”, in which all school bands are invited to compete for cash prizes. Prize money to the top five bands includes: first place, $1,500; second, $1,000; third, $500; fourth, $300; and fifth, $200.

A carnival will operate at the fair on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.
