Eastern Kansas Grazing School scheduled for September at Iola

The annual Eastern Kansas Grazing School will be Sept. 9-10, 2015, presented at two locations, Allen County Fairgrounds and the Allen County Community College Farm.

A collaboration of speakers from K-State Research & Extension, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and University of Missouri Extension will present several timely topics related to rotational grazing and the implementation of management intensive grazing (MiG). Topics to be covered may include: Grazing arithmetic, pasture watering resources, fencing for rotational grazing, matching animal needs to pasture production, and an overview of crabgrass and the Teff Research Plot.

Grazing school begins with registration at the Allen County Fairgrounds, at Riverside Park on South State Street, and will have hands on exercises at the  host location, Allen County Community College Farm, located at located at 1876 1400 St., Iola, Kan.

Several of the discussions will involve in-pasture, hands-on learning opportunities, including determining forage availability and allocating pastures. Fencing and watering discussions will include time for attendees to view and evaluate different types of equipment to determine if they could be used in their operations.

Adult learners are the target audience for the grazing school. Registration is $50 for the first person from a farm or ranch, and includes proceedings, snacks and three meals. Additional persons from the same operation are an additional $25 each, which includes snacks and three meals. Registration will be limited to 35 farms on a first-come basis.
