Travel back in time: Retro Saturday at Pomona State Park

Visitors relax at Becky Schmale’s campsite and enjoy her 1964 Serro Scotty Tonga during last year’s vintage camper open house at Pomona State Park.

There will be no need for a time machine Saturday as traveling back in time will be as easy as visiting Pomona State Park for the Going Retro Car Show, Vintage Camper Open House, and campground sock hop.

More than 30 vintage camping trailers have registered to be on site in the Kansa Campground for an open house 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22. Visitors are welcome to look inside the vintage campers and talk to owners about their love of the old RVs.

At the same time will be the Going Retro Car Show, featuring classic autos of all ages, at the Waucondah Campground.

Visitors and spectators will pick the top five cars and top three trailers – vote by 12:30 p.m. – with prizes awarded at 1:30 p.m.

For the kids, old-fashioned games are scheduled 10 a.m. to noon, and concessions will be offered by the Friends of Pomona State Park, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Kansa Shelter.

As a finale to the nostalgic campout, a sock hop will be held around 7:30 Saturday evening, in the parking lot at the laundry in Kansa campground. Everyone is invited to bring their dancing shoes, lawn chairs and their choice of refreshments and enjoy a sock-hoppin’ fun evening at Pomona State Park. In case of rain, the sock hop will be at the Southwind Shelter House.

The event is hosted by Friends of Pomona State Park. To reach Pomona State Park, from Lyndon, Kan., go two miles north on U.S. 75/K-31 to state Highway 268, then 4.5 miles east to state Highway 368; then north 1.2 miles to Pomona State Park, 22900 Highway 368, Vassar, KS 66543.
