Help House News: Coat give-away to begin; children’s coats needed

There will be assistance available to help with increased summer cooling costs. Applicants must complete the simple “Good Sense Budget Course” which will be offered Sept. 21 and 28. The morning session is 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. both days; with the evening class 6-9:30 pm, both days. You must attend both days to complete the course. Upon course completion, you will be eligible for assistance. Call 785-828-4888 to pre-register for the class if you are a resident of Osage County.

The next Help House board meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. Our special guest will be Jami Reever, director of United Way of the Flint Hills. All pastors are encouraged to attend the board meetings or stop by the center anytime for a visit, to help out or request a tour.

Many thanks go out to Zion Lutheran Church and Overbrook United Methodist Church for the collections for the food pantry from their vacation Bible school programs, to the Osage City Senior Center for the car load of donations from their special bingo collection of cash, food and many miscellaneous items, and to those who donated items for the silent auctions for the Melvern and Overbrook fairs and especially everyone that bid at the auctions. The total raised from both was more than $3,000.

The total number of households served during the month of July was 181. Between Jan. 1 and June 1 this year, 254 unduplicated individuals have been served through Help House.

Help House and Hope House, which is our sister organization serving Franklin County, are coming together by hosting a one-day retreat for all of our volunteers 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 19. Presenters are Chad and Allison Chambers, of Baldwin City. The theme for the day will be “Renewing your Volunteer Passion and Purpose.” Registration will open at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be served and there is no charge to the volunteer, but we do need for everyone to pre-register so we have enough materials and lunch ordered. Be sure to call Pam Bilyeu, Help House director, to be counted. Hope to see everyone there.

We are planning to hold our second annual Coat-Give-A-Way in October, so we are asking for donations of coats any and all sizes that are clean and in good condition, to be brought into the center beginning Sept. 1. Last year children’s coats were in short supply, so please think of those children in need as you are going through your closets and storage. Sizes from infant on up are needed.

We are saddened by the loss of one of our long time volunteers, Phyllis Tudor, of Overbrook. She passed away Aug. 14. She will be greatly missed. Our prayers go out to Pastor Bill and their family.
