Kiwanis: Looking for you!

By Dave Azwell

This month, September 2015, Osage City Kiwanis celebrated its 58th year as a service club in Osage City. Kiwanis is a local organization of both men and women volunteers dedicated to serving the children of Osage City. It is a member of Kiwanis International which is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. And it is always on the lookout for new members who want to be a part of an organization that is second to none in serving the children of Osage City.

Osage City Kiwanis is an active member of the Kansas Kiwanis District/Division XI and supports a number of service leadership programs in USD 420 including Key Club (OCHS), Builders Club (OCMS), K-Kids (OCES), BUG or Bring Up Grades (OCES) and Read Around the World (OCES).

Kiwanis supports and funds youth related activities such as scholarships for graduating seniors, the elementary WATCH D.O.G.S program, After Prom, the Booster Club, the wrestling club, school plays, educational performers and the yearly Kiwanis Key Leader Conference for high school age students. Other funding and support is provided for Boys State participants, Osage City Parks and Recreation, Osage City Public Library, and providing emergency buckets for the elementary school.

Osage City Kiwanis has four fundraising events each year: A pancake breakfast in November, a chili feed in January or February, providing goods and services for the Smoke in the Spring BBQ contest in April, and the ongoing paper recycling project, which recycles approximately 60-80 tons of miscellaneous paper each year.

New members are the lifeblood of any organization. Whether you are single, young married, married with children, empty nesters or retired, Kiwanis is looking for you. Husbands and wives are welcome. Meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at the Osage City Santa Fe Depot, at Fifth and Market streets. Everyone is cordially invited to come to any meeting. The door is always open.
