Mary Geneva Settles, 100, Overbrook: June 5, 1915 – Oct. 15, 2015

101915-settlesOVERBROOK – Mary Geneva Settles, 100, of Overbrook, Kan., passed away on Oct. 15, 2015, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. She was born June 5, 1915, in Olmitz, Kan., to George Harper and Elizabeth Katherine (Hickey) Harper.

She grew up in rural Lane County, Kan., graduating from Healy High School, Healy, Kan., with the class of 1933. Mary lived in Healy through the dust storms of the 1930s, working at the local hardware store in Healy.

On April 17, 1941, Mary was united in marriage to Alwyn Cecil “Walt” Settles, in Sanford, Fla., where Walt was stationed in the U.S. Army Air Corps. During Walt’s time in the military they lived in a number of places, including Delaware, Pennsylvania, Garden City, Kan., Tacoma, Wash., Anchorage, Alaska, moving to Overbrook in 1957.

Mary worked at O’Bryhims Thriftway in Overbrook for 13 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, in Overbrook.

Mary and Walt shared over 60 years of loving marriage until he preceded her in death on April 1, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jim Harper, George Harper Jr.; and four sisters, Edna Dutoit, Faye Pinkston, Gladys Glancy and Hazel Cooling.

Mary is survived by a son Alwyn Cecil Settles Jr. of DeKalb, Ill.; a daughter, LaNno Settles, Seward, Alaska; and a granddaughter, Cecilia Settles, Chicago, Ill.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Overbrook United Methodist Church. Family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Greenwood-Roberts Funeral Home, Overbrook. Interment will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Healy Cemetery, Healy.
