Visit the senior center for a swinging, fun time

The time to visit the Osage County Senior Center is now! Everybody is welcome! Join us at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 17, for National Bread Day. Enjoy homemade bread, fruit spreads and coffee. Homemade bread will be made by our friends from COF. At 10 a.m. sit down to watch a magic show. I have specifically asked the magician to take off the pounds induced by the amount of bread and jam I plan to consume!

In recognition of National Music month, at 1 p.m. Nov. 18, we’ll present Dr. Herschel Stroud and “Jump, Jive and Swing – An Era in America”. There had never been a popular music phenomenon like the Swing Era. It was impossible to listen to the radio, or leaf through a newspaper or magazine, or enter a record store, or a dance hall, or see a movie, without being confronted by Swing music. It was everywhere. But when was this era? Where did it begin? Why did it happen? Who was responsible? Stroud has been playing Swing music since he had his own dance band in high school. Swing surged to an unimaginable height of popularity in the late 1930s, 40s and 50’s. And it exists with us today. Swing bands are still swinging, they still play for dances. Swing music is now background for many TV commercials. Swing is still apparent in popular movies. It has devotees of all ages. Sit back, listen to its origin, its history and its sound, as Herschel takes a musical journey, with you as passengers, to learn about a true American phenomenon. Swing!
