Commuters: Interstate resurfacing project to begin in Lyon County

(Project start date has been rescheduled from Monday, May 20 to Tuesday, May 28.)

Weather permitting, a resurfacing project will begin May 28 on a 10.3-mile stretch of southbound Interstate 35 from the I-35/U.S. 50 interchange east to the Lyon/Coffey County line.
The project will start at the I-35/U.S. 50 interchange and proceed east. Project work includes milling at bridge approaches, followed by the application of a hot mix asphalt 2-inch overlay on all mainline lanes, and all new pavement markings. The resurfacing project will smooth the road and fill surface defects that can shorten pavement life. Work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.
Beginning May 28, southbound I-35 from the I-35/U.S. 50 interchange to the Lyon/Coffey County line will be reduced to one lane, 24/7 round the clock, throughout the project duration. Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage and cones. Drivers should expect minor delays throughout the project duration. There will be a posted speed limit of 65 mph and a 14-foot lane width restriction 24 hours a day through the project work zone throughout the project duration.
The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.
APAC Kansas Inc. Shears Division, Hutchinson, is the primary contractor on this resurfacing project with a total contract cost of $2.859 million. The scheduled completion date for the resurfacing project is late June 2013, weather permitting.
This project is funded by T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature in May 2010. Find out more about this and other T-WORKS projects at: http://kdotapp.ksdot.org/TWorks/.
