Park bench placed in remembrance of young life

Gathered around a park bench placed in his honor, family and friends remembered young Kaleb Rodney Hobbs Saturday at Lyndon’s city park.

Kaleb died unexpectedly on Oct. 4, 2011, of sudden infant death syndrome. He was four months and 25 days old.

Since then, his parents, Rochelle and Ricky Hobbs, of Lyndon, their two children, Kyle and Kaylee, other family members and friends sought a way to honor Kaleb, remembered as a “precious little miracle” by his family.

A bench in the park, where parents, grandparents and family members can watch over children playing at the playground, was chosen as an appropriate memorial. The community set out to raise necessary funds, completing the goal with a 5K run/walk held last December.

During Saturday’s short ceremony, Pastor Elvin Dillard, of Grace Community Church, Overbrook, reassured the gathering that everyone would be able to reunite with lost loved ones some day, and though we miss them, they are waiting in heaven for us. He said the park bench at the playground reminds us that God has a very large playground to watch over; and the bench will provide peace and solace for those who sit and watch children at play.

Following a group prayer, family members thanked their friends and the community for raising funds to purchase the bench and a plaque that denotes, “In loving memory of Kaleb Rodney Hobbs, Precious Little Miracle.”
