K-68 bridge replacement project begins next week

Monday, March 21, the Kansas Department of Transportation expects to begin a project to replace the bridge over the Marais des Cygnes River on state Highway 68 in Franklin County. The bridge is located 8.5 miles east of the Osage-Franklin county line.

The new bridge is to be constructed on an offset highway alignment south of the existing bridge. Two-way traffic will continue to use the existing bridge on the current highway alignment, with the speed limit reduced to 55 mph through the work zone.

KDOT awarded the construction contract of $3.7 million to A.M. Cohron & Son, Inc., of Atlantic, Iowa. The project is expected to be finished and the new bridge open to traffic by the end of 2016, weather permitting.

The preservation project is funded under the T-WORKS transportation program. For more information, contact KDOT Garnett area engineer Donna Schmit at 785-448-5446, or Priscilla Petersen, KDOT southeast district public affairs manager, at 877-550-5368.
