NWS issues red flag warning; high fire danger Wednesday

RED-FLAGThe National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a red flag warning for Osage County and portions of northeast Kansas, in effect from 1 p.m. today, March 16, 2016, until 7 p.m. The warning was issued due to expected gusty winds, low relative humidity and critical fuels for fire.

Wind will be from the west at 15 to 25 mph sustained, with gusts to 30 mph. Minimum relative humidity will fall to 17 to 20 percent during late afternoon. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures may lead to extreme fire behavior.

Affected counties include Osage, Republic, Cloud, Clay, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Jefferson, Ottawa, Dickinson, Geary, Morris, Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Douglas, Lyon, Franklin, Coffey and Anderson.
