John L. Dunn, 90, Carbondale: July 3, 1925 – May 8, 2016

051016-dunnCARBONDALE, Kan. – John L. “Jack” Dunn, 90, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2016, at the Midland Hospice House, Topeka, Kan.  He was born on July 3, 1925, in Burlingame, Kan., the son of John and Mary Smith Dunn.

Jack grew up in Burlingame, graduating from Burlingame High School in 1943. He had lived in Carbondale since 1949.

He served in the U.S. Army as a tank crewman with the 16th Armored Division in the European Theater during World War II. He worked as a mechanic and as a service technician for Ideal Music for many years. He was a member of the Carbondale Church of Christian Fellowship, had served on the Carbondale Zoning Board for many years, was a member of the American Legion Capital Post No. 1, and was a life member of the VFW Post 1650.

On Dec. 21, 1946, Jack was married to Violet Punches, in Topeka.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bob Dunn; two sisters, Doris Smith and Jane Jankovsky; and a granddaughter, Kelly Jo.

Jack is survived by his wife of 69 years, Violet; son, Michael Dunn (Patricia), Lenexa, Kan.; daughter, Vickie Newstrom (Cole), Lawrence, Kan.; brother, Dale Dunn, Wichita, Kan.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 13, at the Carbondale Church of Christian Fellowship. The family will receive friends 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, at the church in Carbondale. Burial will be in the Carbondale Cemetery.
