Marion “Sam” Butterfield, 96, Hutchinson: March 8, 1920 – May 15, 2016

051716-butterfieldHUTCHINSON, Kan. – Marion “Sam” Butterfield, 96, died May 15, 2016, in Hutchinson. Sam was born March 8, 1920, on the family farm in Overbrook, Kan., the son of Bernard and Lila (Walker) Butterfield.

Sam graduated from Overbrook High School and Emporia State University (B.S. in 1947, M.S. in 1962). While at Emporia, he was a member of the track and field team, past president of the Letterman’s “K” Club and a member of the Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity. He served for 42 months in the United States Air Force during World War II, 18 months in England with the 447th B-17 Bomber Group.

On Aug. 3, 1947, Sam married Marcia Jo Anderson. She passed away Oct. 25, 2004, in Hutchinson. Sam was a teacher and men’s basketball coach at Wamego High School and Garden City High School before moving to Hutchinson. He spent 28 years at Hutchinson Community College as the men’s basketball coach and athletic director. Through his career, Sam was honored by induction into the halls of fame at Overbrook High School, Emporia State University, National Junior College Athletic Association, Hutchinson Quarterback Club and the National Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Sam was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lysle Rishel American Legion Post 68, and the Hutchinson Community College Alumni Association.

He is survived by his sons, Stephen and wife, Shelby, of Paradise Valley, Ariz., Scott and wife, Susie, of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren, Stephen and wife, Mary, Matthew, Brooks, Jack and Bailey, all of Arizona, Tyler, Jake and Sam, all of Idaho; great-grandchildren, Mary Josephine and George; special friends, Marphy Butterfield, Sandy and Leland Woodson, and Wauneta Darnell.

Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Jo; mother and father; sister, Myrtle Brown; infant sister, Arlene; and brothers, Edwin, Harold, Duane and Lloyd.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2016, on the Sam Butterfield Court at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, 720 E. 11th St., Hutchinson, with the Reverend Mark Miller officiating. The family invites you to wear your HCC colors to the service. A private family graveside service will be held in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sam and Jo Butterfield Scholarship Fund, in care of HCC Endowment Association, 1300 N. Plum St., Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Sam loved the people of Hutchinson, his HCC Blue Dragons, and the many young men who played for him.
