Topeka man arrested as suspect in stolen truck pursuit

The Osage County Sheriff’s Office has reported that a Topeka man was arrested yesterday morning after two law enforcement vehicles were rammed by a stolen communications company truck.

Osage County Sheriff Laurie Dunn reported today that Micale Joseph Wayn Manganiello, 27, Topeka, was taken into custody at 9:49 a.m. June 30 as a suspect in the vehicle pursuit and crash that happened early Thursday morning.

According to a press release from the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, an Osage County Sheriff’s Office vehicle and a Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office vehicle were damaged after a pursuit of a stolen Cox Communications truck early Thursday morning. A search for the suspected driver of the truck began after the truck was found near Scranton, in Osage County.

The release said that at around 4:05 a.m. Thursday, a Shawnee County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop the utility truck on U.S. Highway 75 near SW 77th Street. The vehicle matched the description of one that had been called in by a citizen as suspicious near SW 57th Street and Topeka Boulevard, and had been seen leaving that area. The driver of the truck did not stop, initiating a pursuit. The vehicle continued south into Osage County, where Osage County Sheriff’s deputies joined the pursuit near West 165th Street and South Lewelling Road.

The pursued truck came to an abrupt stop before reversing and ramming the Shawnee County Sheriff’s 2016 Ford Explorer, which was pushed back into the Osage County Sheriff’s 2013 Dodge Charger that had responded to assist, disabling both. The truck then fled the area.

Two deputies in the Shawnee County Sheriff’s vehicle and one in the Osage County Sheriff’s vehicle received minor injuries. All three were treated by Osage County EMS at the scene and released.

The stolen vehicle was located a short time later near West 173rd Street and South Scranton Road. The truck was identified as the Cox Communications truck stolen in Topeka on June 28. Sheriff’s deputies and the Kansas Highway Patrol searched the area for the suspect.

According to Dunn, Manganiello was located at 165th Street and Scranton Road near where the truck was found, and was detained due to being listed as a missing or endangered person by the Topeka Police Department.

Manganiello has since been charged with fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement officers, reckless driving, aggravated battery on law enforcement officers, aggravated assault on law enforcement officers, criminal damage to property, obstruction, and possession of stolen property, all felonies. Bond had not been set as of Friday morning.

Dunn said the owner of the stolen Ford F550 truck and Shawnee County deputies were able to identify Manganiello as the driver of the truck during the pursuit.
