Senior center serves up nutrition monthly

You know the old saying, “You are what you eat.” There is a lot of truth to that. Just look at our nation’s waistline and you can see that too many Americans eat too much fast food, too much comfort foods, and way too many calories. A body builder in training can get away with 6,000 calories per day, but most of us can’t. Nutrition is the most important building block to our health, and we can make both good and bad nutrition choices that have a profound impact on our wellbeing.

That is why we provide nutritional foods to seniors through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, also known as Harvesters, here at the Osage County Senior Center, every third Thursday of the month.

If you qualify, you can receive a large box of healthy foods to supplement your groceries. To qualify, you must be more than 60 years of age and have a monthly household income of $1,265 or less for a household of one and $1,705 or less for a household of two. We have a short and easy form to fill out to verify age and income requirements. Not only does this help with your budget, but it also provides healthy and nutritious foods to supplement your dietary needs.

Many of our local seniors take advantage of this program and if you are not one of them, we invite you to come in to the center and apply for this valuable program. But we also invite you to come in and join the others in the activities and programs we have daily. For more information, stop by the center at 604 Market St., Osage City, or call 785-528-4906.
