With goal of serving children of the world, Kiwanis observes Youth Protection Week

Kiwanis International has designated Sept. 11-17, 2016, as Youth Protection Week for its Kiwanis clubs. KI is a premier provider of youth service clubs and programs. Serving the children of the world is its guiding principle. Local Kiwanis clubs are held to high standards of conduct and awareness when it comes to working with the youth of their communities.

KI has provided a set of youth protection guidelines for all clubs. It is the responsibility of each club to offer training on an annual basis to its members. Various training materials have been provided for that purpose which helps to educate and inform members working with youth under the age of 18. The guidelines are not only good to know for Kiwanis activities, but also good in general for anyone who works with the youth of today.

The Youth Protection Guidelines provide information on accepted methods and best practices in working with the youth of today. Such items as being a chaperone, obtaining criminal background checks, monitoring overnight stays, transporting youth in a vehicle, medicating, use of alcoholic beverages and tobacco, reporting troubling behavior, confidentiality of personal information, interacting with youth on social media, and counseling youth on behavioral or health issues are included in the guidelines.

Osage City Kiwanis has offered information to its members through presentations at meetings and has provided a monthly online link in its newsletter to the youth protection guidelines information. As sponsors of several service leadership programs at the schools in USD 420 (Key Club, Builders Club, KKids, BUG), all advisors for these clubs have undergone and passed a criminal background check. As of October 1, 2016, KI will require all advisors to renew their criminal background check, which will be good for two years. It will be renewed again every two years after that.
