Vassar FunFest: Fall fun at Osage County’s biggest little town

1026015_vassarfunfest2016The largest unincorporated city in Osage County, Vassar, is getting ready for its fun, fall family event this Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016. Vassar’s FunFest has become a tradition for the rural community, with everyone in Osage County and beyond invited to come and enjoy the day. Vassar FunFest starts off with a costume parade for kids of all ages. The day includes live musical entertainment, kids crafts, games, pie contest, car show, bounce house and silent auction, with all activities centered around Vassar’s historical one-room schoolhouse and town square park.

Costumed kids who want to be in the parade should gather at the Vassar Post Office before 10:45 a.m.; the parade starts at 11. The parade travels down Main Street to the schoolhouse, where winners will be announced and prizes awarded in each age group. After costume judging, the crowd will be entertained by the Prospect BlueGrass band.

The event helps raise funds for upkeep of the Vassar schoolhouse and the surrounding community park. Area volunteers will offer concessions, including homemade chili and pies, as a fundraiser.

Kids’ fun will be centered at the schoolhouse, and includes games, face painting and a bounce house. Kids’ activities are free.

All local pie makers are invited to enter the pie contest, which will undergo blind judging by an impartial pie-lovin’ panel. Pie entries should be dropped off at the schoolhouse by 11 a.m. Saturday to be judged in the contest. After judging, pie entries will be offered for sale as part of the concessions.

Silent auction items (new and gently used) will fill the one-room schoolhouse; bidding will be open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bidders need not be present at closing and will be contacted if they have the high bid on any items. To donate new or next to new items for the auction, contact Dianne Williams at 785-828-4284.

The car show will be on display in the town’s park, with prizes offered in several categories. For more information about the car show, contact Tony Horne at 785-214-9448.

Vassar is about 30 miles southeast of Topeka: Take U.S. Highway 75 south to state Highway 268, east to Croco Road, and north 3/4 mile.
