Philip Spencer, 78, Melvern: July 23, 1938 – Nov. 2, 2016

MELVERN, Kan. – Philip Spencer, 78, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2016, at the Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka, Kan. He was born on July 23, 1938, at Stull, Kan., the son of Russell and Maud Herman Spencer.

Philip grew up in Stull and graduated from Lawrence High School. He moved to the rural Melvern, Kan., area in 1972, where he has lived since.

Philip had been a farmer and stockman most of his life and also worked as a truck driver for the farm as well. He served in the United States Army Reserve as a staff sergeant and was a member of the Section Church of Christ, Osage City.

On Jan. 14, 1961, Philip was married to Gwen Duvall in Lawrence, Kan.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Georgia Wingfield and Bonnie Hinck.

Philip is survived by his wife, Gwen, of the home; two sons, Patrick (Jeannie) Spencer, of Patterson, Calif., and Rusty (Bobbie) Spencer, Melvern; daughter, Sherry (Steve) Higbie, Rantoul, Kan.; brother, James (Fonda) Spencer, Quenemo, Kan.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the East View Cemetery at Big Springs, Douglas County. The family will receive friends 6:30-8 p.m. Friday at the Feltner Funeral Chapel, Lyndon.
