OTTAWA, Kan. – Melvin C. Miller, 82, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, at the Ottawa Retirement Village, Ottawa, Kan. He was born on Nov. 22, 1933, in Pomona, Kan., the son of Roy and Ruth Prewitt Miller.
He had lived in Pomona most of his life, but had lived in Ottawa for several years as well.
Melvin had worked at the Sunflower Ammunition Plant, near Desoto, Kan., for Bennett’s Ice Cream, Ottawa, and Mid-America Canning, Lenexa, Kan. He returned to Sunflower Ammunition until his retirement. After retirement he worked for the city of Pomona and Pomona schools. He was a dirt track stock car racer and throughout his life was an avid runner.
Melvin was married to Marilyn Feuerborn on Sept. 12, 1953; they later divorced. Darlene Randell had been his companion for many years until she passed away on Dec. 24, 2015.
Melvin was also preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ruth; his two brothers, Carrol Miller and Harlan Miller; and a grandson, Matt Soper.
Melvin is survived by his five children, Marcy (Joe) Soper, of Quenemo, Kan., Curt (Susan) Miller, Overbrook, Kan., Janie (Stan) Dillon, Ottawa, Debbie (Charlie) Reno, Pomona, and Mark Miller, Pomona; two sisters, Charlotte Chambers, Baldwin City, Kan., and Treva Simmons, Manhattan, Kan.; 10 grandchildren, Jessica Soper, Austin (Amanda) Soper, Kristin (George) Wong, Dallas (Lacy) Dillon, Ciara Dillon, Samantha (Jamison) Shaw, Montana Reno, Kyle Miller, Emily Miller and Quintin Miller; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Nov. 18, at the Feltner Funeral Home, Lyndon, at 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., when they will go to Woodlawn Cemetery at Pomona for a graveside service.
