Two women arrested after burglary reported near Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Kan. – Two women were arrested late Sunday night east of Carbondale, Kan., after a resident reported a burglary in progress at his home.

According to a report from the Osage County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call came in at 11:48 p.m. Jan. 29, 2017, from a resident in the 3000 block of E 137th Street reporting a burglary in progress. The victim reported he had arrived home to find two female subjects inside of his residence attempting to remove property. As the suspects fled, the victim provided descriptions of the suspects and their vehicle to dispatchers.

Within four minutes of the 911 call, an Osage County Sheriff’s deputy spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspects’, and stopped them at 137th Street and south California Road. Upon further investigation, the two suspects were taken into custody.

The suspects, identified as Jaime Lee Cowan, 36, of Topeka, and Laura Ann Barnhart, 31, of Hiawatha, were booked into the Osage County Jail on charges of aggravated burglary. Barnhart was also charged with interference with law enforcement after giving a false name. As of Monday afternoon, Cowan had been released on $10,000 bond, while Barnhart remains in custody.

Carbondale Police Department assisted the Osage County Sheriff’s Office in the case.
