TOPEKA, Kan. – Mariaelena G. Carreno Whitcomb, 73, of Topeka, Kan., died Feb. 1, 2017, at Stormont-Vail Hospital. She was born Nov. 30, 1943, in Celaya, GTO, Mexico, the daughter of Tony R. and Margaret (Guerrero) Carreno.
Mariaelena worked in food service for USD 501. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. She married Robert H. Whitcomb, in Lawrence, Kan. They later divorced.
Survivors include her children, Diane (Robert) Baysinger, Tecumseh, Kan., Cindy (Greg) Donley, Carbondale, Kan., Bobbie Jo Rodriguez, Topeka, and Robert “Jimbo” Whitcomb, Topeka; siblings Tony “Little Tony” (Patricia) Carreno, Mary Lou (Bill) Kramer, and Guy (Connie) Carreno, all of Topeka; 10 grandchildren, Sgt. Skylar Donley, serving in Kuwait, Johnathan Rodriguez, Dane Baysinger, Tess May, Jacob Donley, Chae Baysinger, Jacob Whitcomb, Victoria Whitcomb, Logan Whitcomb, and Amanda Donley; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Guy Carreno in 1951, and a grandson, Dakota Stephen Donley.
A memorial visitation will be held 9-10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Inurnment will be held immediately following the mass at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
