MELVERN LAKE, Kan. – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Osage County Sheriff’s Office are investigating after human skeletal remains were found Friday night at Melvern Lake.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park ranger discovered skeletal remains during a routine check on the north side of Melvern Lake, near Turkey Point Day Use Area. The park ranger contacted the Osage County Sheriff’s Office, which requested KBI assistance around 6:20 p.m. Friday.
According to a KBI press release, further forensic examination is needed to determine the person’s sex, race, age, and cause of death. Forensic anthropology experts from the Washburn University Anthropology Department are also assisting with the investigation.
With the investigation ongoing, the KBI announced that no further information will be released at this time.
