Nona Maurine Adams, 93, Lawrence: Dec. 22, 1923 – Sept. 13, 2017

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Nona Maurine Adams, 93, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, Kan. Maurine was born Dec. 22, 1923, in Manhattan, Kan. She was the daughter of Albert Edward and Mary Lee (Turner) Waterstradt.

She graduated from Chapman High School in 1941. She earned a degree in mathematics from the University of Kansas in 1945 and a Master’s Degree in Library Science from Emporia State University in 1972.

She was joined in marriage to Paul D. Adams on June 24, 1945, in Lawrence. To this union three daughters were born: Carol, Gwen and Susan. Paul preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1999. She was also preceded in death by two brothers.

Maurine was a mother and housewife, and later served for 20 years as the librarian of Osage City High School, Osage City, Kan. After retiring from teaching, she also served on the Northeast Kansas Library Association Board.

She was a member of the Osage City United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Sorosis Club. Maurine was an avid KU Jayhawk. She served a term on the Kansas Union Board of Directors, and she was given the Mildred Clodfelter award in 1989 by the KU Alumni Association for her extensive support of the Kansas Honors Program in Osage County and surrounding counties.

Maurine will be forever remembered by her three daughters, Carol Ann (Clifton) Brown, of Alexandria, Va., and Gwen Adams and Dr. Susan Adams, both of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister, Joan Zingaro, College Station, Texas; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Laaser, of Pittsburgh, Penn., and William Laaser, of Sri Racha, Thailand.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at the First United Methodist Church, 219 S. Sixth St., Osage City. The family will receive friends for an hour before the service.
