By Raylene Quaney

Help House is holding another quilt raffle for a full-size quilt made by Vicky Lawrence, of Overbrook. Tickets are $5 for one ticket, or three tickets for $10. Ask any volunteer to purchase a ticket, or call the center at 785-828-4888 for information or to order tickets by phone.

Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign

The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign has begun, and kettles have been placed in area businesses throughout Osage County.

If you, your family, organization or group would like to volunteer to be a bell ringer this year, please call Help House at 785-828-4888 to leave your contact information. We will be in touch soon. The fundraising goal set last year for our county was $5,500 with more than $7,000 raised. We are hoping to exceed that amount this year. Remember when giving that 86 percent of your donation stays in Osage County to help with emergency assistance.

Amazon Smiles

Remember when shopping for Christmas, if you are ordering from Amazon, you may donate a percentage to Help House through Amazon Smiles; look for the link on Amazon’s website.

Christmas stores

Help House has begun collecting new toys, and gifts for men and women for the Christmas stores.  If you are dropping off items at Help House, please do not leave them in the shed, bring them into the center during business hours.

Bicycle drawing

Help House has received four refurbished bicycles from the Lyndon Lions Club to be given away to those receiving services from Help House. You must come in to Help House to register. The drawing for two girls and two boys bikes will be held at noon on Dec. 16.

Help House to be busy during December

Help House will be open Saturday, Dec. 2, due to our holiday schedule.

Saturday, Dec. 9, children will be able to shop for their parents or guardians, assisted by some of Santa’s elves, then have their gifts wrapped by other elves. Mrs. Clause will be there to visit, and you will have an opportunity to have your child’s photo taken with her from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (The food pantry will not be open this day).

Dec. 13-16, the Christmas store will open for parents to shop for their children. We coordinate our holiday meals and Christmas outreach with ECAT and ECKAN to prevent duplication in services and to reach out to those who could use a little help during the Christmas season. Dec. 19-23, grandparents and others may shop for the children in their homes.

Dec. 13 and 14, 1-2 p.m., Christmas food boxes will be distributed to those who are registered and have indicated which day they will pick up.

Help House will be closed Dec. 26, 2017-Jan. 1, 2018.

Good Sense Budget Course

The next Good Sense Budget Course will be held 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Jan. 27, 2018. This is just a one-day course.  Once the class has been completed, class participants will be eligible to apply for assistance to help with heating or cooling cost. Assistance is provided on limited basis for any heating source whether it is gas, electric, propane or wood. During summer months assistance may be provided for electric utility bills for the additional cost of cooling your home. Participants must come into Help House to pre-register and pick up an information packet, which includes pre-course work to be completed before the first class. Call 785-828-4888 with any questions. Participants are asked to bring a drink and sack lunch with them.

Computer classes

Absolutely basic computer: Want to learn basic computer skills?  This is for the individual who does not know how to operate a computer. Or skills for employment: This course will provide hands-on and immediate assistance with job search and applications. Included in this course would be assistance with using a computer to find job opportunities and writing a resume.

Classes are free of charge and open to the public, but will be limited to four individuals per session. Call Paul Schmidt at 602-238-4793 or 785-793-2149 for more information or to sign up. All ages are welcome.

Help House is open on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, and is located at 131 W. 15th St., Lyndon. For more information, contact Help House at 785-828-4888 or
