Saturday in the Park celebration begins Friday at Scranton

Scranton is gearing up to spend a day in the park Saturday, but the fun gets under way Friday. The annual Saturday in the  Park celebration begins at 5 p.m. Friday evening with a classic car “cruise-in”, which is to be filmed this year by Street Rodding American Style, a television show on public television and some cable channels. There is no entry fee and all vehicles are welcome.

At 6 p.m. Friday, a barbecue meal will be served in the Scranton Community Building, followed by sand volleyball at 7 p.m.

The next morning, volleyball players will wake up and brush the sand off to join the rest of the community at a breakfast served at the United Methodist Church. Those who’ve had an early breakfast will begin the parade lineup at 9 a.m., with the Scranton Lions Club-sponsored parade beginning at 10 a.m.

From 11 a.m to 3 p.m., kids can enjoy the giant inflatable games rides; all-day wristbands will be sold for $5. Also at 11 a.m. is another barbecue meal at the community building, and fun contests will begin with the bike rodeo; kids are to gather at the tennis courts with their bikes for the riding skills contest. Also at 11 is the turtle race; competitors should provide their own racing turtle. Prizes for first, second and third places will be given. The water balloon toss starts at 11:30 a.m. with two-man teams expecting to get wet. A basketball shooting contest begins at noon; prizes will be awarded in each age group.

At 4 p.m., a horseshoe tournament begins. Entry fee is $5, and contestants will draw their partner for the double elimination competition. Entrants must be 16 years old or older. Prizes will be awarded.

The finale of Saturday in the Park will be a fireworks show hosted by Scranton Fire and Rescue and set to begin around 10 p.m.
