Bernard ‘Bernie’ B. Smith, 84, Montrose: Oct. 30, 1933 – Dec. 21, 2017

MONTROSE, Colo. – Bernard “Bernie” B. Smith, 84, of Montrose, Colo., passed away Dec. 21, 2017, at Montrose Memorial Hospital. Bernie was born Oct. 30, 1933, in Manitou Springs, Colo., to Roy E. and Minnie I. William Smith.

He graduated from Burlingame High School, Burlingame, Kan., in 1951. He married Claudene W. Collins on Sept. 25, 1954. Bernie enlisted in the Army in 1956 with the goal of a life-long career. He was later medically discharged.

Bernie and Claudene had three children when they moved from Topeka, Kan., to Colorado, and there they had a fourth child. He had 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Bernie earned an associate degree in Denver. He had many jobs over the years but the one he was well known for was driving a truck moving modular homes. He enjoyed restoring antique cars and collecting coins and stamps.

Bernie is survived by his wife, Claudene Smith; children, Tim (Sue) Smith, Todd Smith, Jill (Mike) Rowland, and Melodi (Garland) Simmons; a brother, Maynard (Betty) Smith, Scranton Kan.; and two sisters, Carolyn (Dean) Strohm, Burlingame, and Charlotte (Paul) Rowe, St. Cloud, Fla.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, his parents, two sisters, and two brothers.

A memorial gathering celebrating and honoring his life was held Dec. 30, 2017, in Montrose.
