Larry G. Thompson Sr., 66, Ottawa: May 18, 1951 – March 17, 2018

Larry Gene Thompson Sr., 66, of Ottawa, Kan., passed away March 17, 2018, at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehab. He was born in Ottawa on May 18, 1951, the son of William Ralph Thompson and Eva Marjorie (Herrill) Thompson.

Larry graduated from Pomona High School, Pomona, Kan., with the class of 1969. Larry worked in the construction field all of his working life. For 25 years Larry worked for the University of Kansas, eventually attaining the position of lead concrete finisher, retiring from his job in 2012. He was also a member of Local Union No. 1290.

On Dec. 27, 1983, Larry was united in marriage to Kathy Coffman, in Ottawa. They shared over 34 years of loving marriage.

Larry was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed his free time hunting, especially with his Brittany bird dogs. He was always excited to get out to Pomona Lake to spend time camping and fishing. He really enjoyed fishing at Pomona Lake spillway, Overbrook City Lake, and John Redmond Reservoir. His true passion was his family. He loved to spend time with them all especially his beloved grandchildren. The memories made with his family were true treasures in his life.

Larry is survived by his wife, Kathy Thompson, Ottawa; daughter, Ashli Higbie and her fiance, Steve Hickerson, Baldwin City, Kan.; two sons, Larry Thompson Jr. and his wife, Lexie, Topeka, Kan., and  Casey Thompson, Ottawa; two brothers, Gary Thompson, Pomona, and Jeff Thompson and his wife, Terri, Pomona; two sisters, Linda Gilges and her husband, Brad, Pomona, and Cheryl Turner and her husband, Steve, Overbrook, Kan.; and four grandchildren, Dakota Helm, Reagan Muncy, Hunter Hickerson, and Chance Thompson, and a fifth grandchild due to arrive this summer.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He wished to be cremated with no services. The family will have a fish fry and Celebration of Life that they will announce to family and friends at a later date.
